Charging up Battery Monitoring Systems
As Data Centres are power critical environments it is important to have systems in place to monitor the sources of power, batteries in most cases, in the area. Synerflux’s battery monitoring systems ensure that these critical battery units in Data Centres are in a healthy condition and will function flawlessly when used.
The system has been designed for daily monitoring of the conditions of the batteries. This removes the need for workers to manually test individual batteries, reducing time wastage and workplace hazard. On top of that, our systems greatly increase the chances of identifying a potential failure long before it becomes a power continuity problem.
The Importance of a good Battery Monitoring System
Firstly, you may be wondering what a Battery Monitoring System is exactly? To put it in its simplest terms, it’s a system that monitors the output of power from your Data Centre Batteries.
To be more specific, it is an electronic control circuit that monitors and regulates the charges and discharges of your Data Centre batteries. This includes the detection of battery type, voltages, temperature, capacity, state of charge, power consumption, remaining operating time, charging cycles and some more characteristics.
So as you can see, it’s something that is very important and should not be taken lightly. Its task is essential to keeping things running without problem in your data centre. Our Battery Monitoring Systems at Synerflux are designed to protect the batteries from most issues that can cause overloading and failure of the unit.
This includes protection from deep discharge and over voltage, which are results of an extreme fast charging situation and extremely high discharges of current.
Also, if your system uses multi-cell batteries, our Battery Monitoring Systems provide high-quality cell balancing functions to manage that different battery cells charging and discharging requirements.
Condition Sensing
Battery Monitoring Systems are capable of performing advanced analytics on pack-level with respect to thermal, electrical and mechanical strain, besides also monitoring current/voltage and temperature measurements. Highly sensitive pressure sensors allow us to observe the possible extension of cell housing as a result of overload/charge condition and also detect mechanical impacts on the battery pack‘s mechanical structure.
Finally, a combination of the condition sensor pressure allows for the detection of unauthorized pack manipulations, e.g.,for modification or replacement of cells by measuring variations of pressure or 3D magnetic structures.
Current & Isolation Monitoring
A major function of any Battery Monitoring System is to monitor currents and isolation. Isolation monitoring is an especially key for high-voltage batteries.
In combination with short circuit and overload current measurements, the voltage of the high-voltage DC +/- lines needs to be continuously measured against the battery’s mechanical housing and the surrounding chassis. That is why our Battery Monitoring Systems come with high performance current sensors. These will also allow for use of precise current measurements in the context of Coulomb counting, state-of-charge, depth-of-discharge calculation in battery monitoring or advanced impedance spectroscopy in battery diagnostics.
Cell Monitoring
Cell monitoring is monitoring each of the cells included in a battery and making that they are operated within the safe operating range. Our systems are equipped with the Cell Monitoring function to ensure extra safety. Our Cell Monitoring system monitors and reacts to the State of Health (SoH), State of Charge (SoC) and Depth of Discharge (DoD) with the assistance of balancing ASICs.
Security
At Synerflux we want to assure our customers that all our products provide maximum security when they are installed into their Data Centre systems. This is also the case with our Battery Monitoring systems. Each of our units comes with authentication ICs, which provide protection against counterfeit products. They check that only authorized accessories are used. This helps to avoid damage to user devices as a result of non-original, sub-standard accessories or parts.
